“The change of consumer criteria and with the anxiety to create new fashion trends, manufacturer companies are trying to establish design departments in their organizations. They are also starting to work with famous designers with the hope to create something unique. When we look at the designer-manufacturer cooperation in the carpet industry we see interesting results.”
During the last few years developments in the carpet design industry, have made carpets into more than just floor coverings or a necessity, it has become something much deeper and more artistic. In the past, carpets were just basic products which covered the floor to protect people from the cold, now they create a visual feast thanks to various types of colour and designs.
The change of consumer criteria and with the anxiety to create new fashion trends, manufacturer companies are trying to establish design departments in their organizations. They are also starting to work with famous designers with the hope to create something unique. When we look at the designer-manufacturer cooperation in the carpet industry we see interesting results.
One of the most beautiful examples of this kind of cooperation is the 2008 carpet collection which was created by the Japanese fashion designer Akira Isogawa who worked for the carpet manufacturer Designer Rugs from Australia. Their first colaboration was in 2005 and because of its great success the company has signed agreements with the designer for other collections. The carpets he designed in 2005 created such an interest among consumers. The manager of the company has said that the designs Mr. Isogawa have made are artworks and produced in limited numbers. “The collaboration we have done with our designer is the first step towards our company’s search for creating real artwork. Even though only 30 pieces were produced of each design, we have finished our stock in less than a year.”
The companies first collaboration was with Mr. Isogawa has lead to a very successful beginning. It has also lead to develop new projects with the different designers, therefore creating new collections. Working with designer Julie Patterson has produced collections such as “Dinasour Designs” in 2006 and “Cloth” on 2007. Both these collection have helped the company establish its name in the carpet industry.
Both collections designed by Patterson have attractive designs. They also have bright and soft colour combinations and contain a “pop-art” effect. On the other hand Isogawa’s designs were more soft clours and they contained Japanese symbols which were applied like poetry.
In his 2008 collection Isogawa followed a similar concept of elegance in his designs. You can see the artists delicate signature, modern interpretaion of Japanese symbols, figures and colours. In this collection six different designs and 100% New Zealand wool were used. Due to the delicate designs in the carpets viskos and pure silk were also used. The colour combinations of the collection consisted of cherry, turquoise, coal, bright green and white. Prices for 6 square meters of these carpets’ range between 5990-6990 dollars.
